Kant and Cognitive Science

چکیده
Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) has a serious claim to be the single most influential figure in the pre20th century history of cognitive research. His influence continues to be so deep-running that in many respects he is the intellectual grandfather of contemporary cognitive science. Consider the widely-held view that sensory input has to be worked up using concepts or concept-like states, or the conception of the mind as a system of functions that lies behind the view. Kant originated the first view and worked the second up into something more than a sketch for the first time (the basic idea can be found in Aristotle, Descartes and Hobbes). Both views were central to Kant’s model of knowledge and mind and they came to contemporary cognitive science from him by a direct line of descent. In Section 2, we will explore these influences.

Kant and Hegel on Aesthetic Reflexivity
The paper aims at reevaluating a conception of the aesthetic that was developed by Kant and Hegel but that has been widely neglected due to the fact that their positions in aesthetics have been wrongly considered to be antagonistic to one another. The conception states that the aesthetic is a practice of reflecting on other human practices. Kant was the first to articulate this conception, but ...

متن کاملRescuing Perception: Diagrams in Peirce’s theory of cognitive activity
Introduction Commenting on Pearson’s Grammar of Science, Peirce says: “Professor Pearson ... tells us that each of us is like the operator at a central telephone office, shut out from the external world, of which he is informed only by senseimpressions.” (CP 8.144). Peirce found such a position untenable. However, this was neither because he believed that senses do not have a role to play in co...
متن کاملKant's conception of proper science
Kant is well known for his restrictive conception of proper science. In the present paper I will try to explain why Kant adopted this conception. I will identify three core conditions which Kant thinks a proper science must satisfy: systematicity, objective grounding, and apodictic certainty. These conditions conform to conditions codified in the Classical Model of Science. Kant’s infamous clai...
متن کاملWord and Action: Reconciling Rules and Know-How in Moral Cognition
Recent work in Cognitive Science highlights the importance of exemplar-based know-how in supporting human expertise. Influenced by this model, many accounts of moral knowledge now stress exemplar-based, non-sentential know-how at the expense of the rule-and-principle based accounts favored by Kant, Mill and others. I shall argue, however, that moral thought and reason is an intrinsically comple...
